December 7 - 11, the team of Stand Up Providencia Renace was on the islands making an analysis of the situation and talking to the leaders of Old Providence and Ketlina in order to involve the visions, concerns and expectations of the community regarding the reconstruction.

During the week of December 14-21, the team of the Corporación Antioquia Presente arrived at the archipelago to begin the initial evaluation required for the reconstruction, psychosocial and economic support processes. his is of vital importance so that the investments that are made, are coupled with the needs of the communities and the conditions of the island so that all the projects have a correct long term sustainability.

The main results of this analysis were:

  1. There is a need to implement communication strategies for development, aligning the knowledge of the process in all instances, external public, participating entities and the community in general.

  2. The sectors of greatest social vulnerability are found in the areas with the lowest housing density per hectare: Ketlina Island, Camp and Bottom House.

  3. Reinforced concrete structures suffered great damage. This was caused by projectiles thrown by water or wind, in comparison to traditional wooden houses, which in spite of the onslaught of the elements managed to resist without greater affectation. Many of the traditional houses that suffered significant damage presented lightweight structures in superboards, which do not present adequate characteristics to support the emergency.

Next Steps

  • We are consolidating an alliance with additional civil society organizations in order to add greater capacity and resources to the reconstruction of Old Providence and Ketlina Islands.

  • We have promoted dialogues with the national government in order to share our projection and work in a complementary manner, not to duplicate efforts and to focus on areas where we can carry out a comprehensive intervention to re-establish living conditions.

  • As soon as we have identified the areas, we will proceed to carry out an in-depth characterization of the community and infrastructure in order to formulate an Integral Action Plan for the implementation of the intervention model.
