Objectives

Construction of a community center that will also work as a shelter for Bottom House and Smooth Water Bay communities in Old Providence Island in case of a category 5 hurricane.

Activities

  • Construction of an antihurricane building called "Bottom House and Smooth Water Bay Community Center".

  • Built under american standards ICC500 and complying with colombian construction normative NSR10.

  • Strengthening social fabric through community accompaniment.

  • Implementation of ludic, recreational, formative and educational activities

  • Promotion of a healthy communal living.

  • Development of cultural activities to conserve and promote ancestral knowledge and traditions.

Results

  • Community center built under international standards to act as a shelter in case of a category 5 hurricane.

  • Active participation of the community in decision-making related to the use and beautification of the community center.

  • Recovered and promoted ancestral traditions and knowledges.

  • Sense of belonging and appropriation of the community center by the Bottom House community.

  • Strengthening of community's capacities for risk management in case of natural disasters.

  • Elaboration of a community handbook for a healthy communal living and a natural disaster risk management manual.

  • Creation of "Back Better Together" alliance, conformed by more than 17 NGOs, whose main objective was the reconstruction of the islands post-hurricane IOTA.

2. The smiles route

Objectives

Improve health conditions of children and teenagers born with cleft lip and/or palate condition, through mobile attention in different remote municipalities of La Guajira.

Activities

  • Acquisition and adaptation of a container truck as a mobile health care unit.

  • Provision of health care services to children and teenagers with cleft lip and/or cleft palate and their families in La Guajira

  • Local and regional training for health workers on cleft lip and cleft palate.

Results

  • A mobile health care unit in operation for attending remote communities that includes a consultation room, a space for dental services, waste disposal and storage space.

  • More than 1,500 health consultations in speech therapy, social work, social psychology, nursing, nutrition and pediatrics.

  • 30 health professionals trained in cleft lip and cleft palate.

3. Building meeting spaces with the indigenous community Sol de Los Pastos

Objectives

To build a community meeting center that allows the intergenerational exchange of knowledge and the cultural strengthening of the indigenous community Sol de los Pastos.

Activities

  • Participatory design workshop with representatives of the indigenous community Sol de los Pastos.

  • Launching of the Corona "Pro Habitat Award" focused on the design and construction of a multi-purpose center.

  • Adjustments to the architectural preliminary project according to comments from community representatives.

  • Construction of the community center "Room of thoughts".

Results

  • Construction of the "Room of thoughts" designed as a place for indigenous meetings (mingas) to promote intercultural exchange of ancestral knowledge and traditional medicine.

  • Promote uses and customs of the community according to their indigenous cosmovision, law of origin and natural law. This space will be a meeting place for children (wawas, guambas, chiquillos), women (mamas) and older adults (taitas and sabedores).

450 people who are part of the council.

Indirect:

2000 people from the community, members of youth and women's organizations.


4. A Thousand Windows to the Future in Iguaná

Objectives

Construction of nursery rooms for early childhood in Iguaná neighborhood in Medellín, seeking to contribute to their development.

Activities

  • Construction and adaptation of nursery spaces.

  • Equipment of nursery spaces with the necessary elements and items for the care of children.

Results

  • Learning spaces and didactic rooms were remodeled, adequated, and equipped in La Iguaná, for the comprehensive care of 100 children under 3 years of age.

  • The feeding spaces in nursery rooms comply with the colombian regulations for food handling.

5. Sé Project

Location

Vereda Vista Nieves, municipality of Santa Marta - Magdalena.

Objectives

Construction of a multifunctional library and cultural center.

Activities

  • Construction of a cultural center where communal training process around coffee, art and music will take place.

  • Joint work with rural schools to create and implement strategies to improve the educational process of children and teenagers through the resources available at the Multifunctional library.

Results

Construction of a Multifunctional library equipped for children and teenagers of the Vista Nieves community to enjoy. It will also be of use for coffee producers and their families to meet and exchange knowledge on coffee production.

  • Coffee laboratory where new products and experiences for the consumer will be created and experimented.

  • Alliances with organizations and institutions of the coffee sector to exchange knowledge to help improve the economy of the region.

  • In association with allies such as Fundación Pro Sierra, courses were designed to teach the community about water, biodiversity, and anthropology.

  • Inclusion of the library as part of the educational curriculum of rural educational centers, strengthening the educational processes of the children and teenagers of the area.

  • The multifunctional library will develop courses in reading, writing and literary works for children and teenagers of the Vistas Nieves community.
